Line Tool
Shortcut: L
The Line tool draws straight lines between two points. It uses Bresenham's line algorithm for pixel-perfect results at any angle.
Basic Usage
Select the Line tool by pressing L . Click to set the start point, drag to the end point, and release to draw the line.
Constraining Angles
Hold Shift while drawing to snap the line to 16 pixel-perfect angles:
- Horizontal (0°/180°)
- Vertical (90°/270°)
- Diagonal (45°/135°/225°/315°)
- Isometric slopes (26.565° and 63.435°, in every quadrant)
The snapped lines use exact integer pixel ratios (1:1 for diagonals, 2:1 for isometric slopes), so they render without stray steps — handy for isometric outlines.
Line Width
The line width comes from the shared shape-size control used by other shape tools. It is independent of the brush size, so the brush size shortcuts do not affect it. Adjust it:
- Set the size in the tool options row while the Line tool is active
- D + drag — Visual size adjustment
- Ctrl + scroll wheel — Step the width up or down
Drawing from the Middle
Hold Ctrl while dragging to grow the line out from its midpoint instead of from the point you started on. Holding Ctrl suspends grid snapping for the drag.
Ink Modes
The Line tool supports three ink modes, set in the tool options row:
- Simple — Standard color application. The line replaces the pixels beneath it.
- Lock Alpha — Only applies color where paint already exists. Useful for outlining within a shape without spilling outside.
- Shading — Steps through the active color ramp with each pixel along the line, creating gradient or shading effects.
Tips
- Lines are drawn with the current foreground color.
- For connected line segments, you can also use the Brush with Shift +click to draw lines from the last brush position.
- Lines respect symmetry settings when enabled.
