Exact Frame Timing
Every frame's delay from the source GIF carries over untouched, in milliseconds.
Lossless Frame Copy
Frames are written to APNG without extra quantization — you don't lose anything the GIF hadn't already lost.
Native Browser Playback
The output plays automatically in an <img> tag on any modern browser. No JavaScript needed.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is APNG?
APNG (Animated Portable Network Graphics) is an extension to PNG that supports animation. It stores full 24-bit color and an 8-bit alpha channel per pixel, unlike GIF which is limited to 256 colors and 1-bit (on/off) transparency.
Will converting to APNG bring back colors my GIF lost?
No. GIF already reduced your image to 256 colors per frame before you got here, and converting the file doesn't restore what was discarded. What this tool does avoid is re-quantizing on top of that: your GIF's exact colors are copied into the APNG frame-for-frame, with nothing further lost in the conversion itself.
Are the frame delays preserved exactly?
Yes. Each frame's delay is read directly from the GIF (in milliseconds) and written to the APNG's timing data unchanged — no averaging to a single FPS, no drift.
Why convert a GIF to APNG at all?
APNG is a better target for further editing: importing the result into an image editor gives you a real alpha channel to work with, instead of GIF's all-or-nothing transparency. It's also the more compatible format for tools and pipelines built around PNG rather than GIF.
