Why Convert to GIF?

Works Everywhere

GIF plays on Discord, older browsers, and platforms that still choke on APNG.

Transparency Preserved

APNG's alpha channel collapses to GIF's on/off transparency, not a black fringe.

Adjustable Color Budget

Dial the palette down from 256 colors to trade quality for a smaller file.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will I lose color quality converting APNG to GIF?

Yes, and it's worth knowing going in: GIF caps every frame at 256 colors and has no partial transparency, while APNG supports full 24-bit color and 8-bit alpha. If your APNG uses smooth gradients, soft shadows, or partial transparency, expect visible banding and hard-edged alpha in the GIF. This tool quantizes as cleanly as it can, but it can't put back detail GIF's format doesn't support.

Why convert to GIF at all if it loses quality?

Compatibility. Plenty of platforms — Discord, forums, older browsers, some CMSs — either don't render APNG or fall back to a static first frame. GIF is the format that reliably animates everywhere, even at the cost of color depth.

What does the color slider do?

It caps how many colors each frame is quantized down to (GIF's hard limit is 256). Lowering it shrinks the file further at the cost of more visible banding — useful if you're chasing a small file size rather than maximum fidelity.

Are the frame delays preserved exactly?

Yes. Each frame's delay is read from the source APNG in milliseconds and carried over to the GIF's timing data, so playback speed matches the original.
