Frequently Asked Questions

What is a sprite sheet?

A sprite sheet is a single image that packs many frames or sprites into one file, laid out on a grid or in a strip. Game engines load the sheet once and draw individual frames from it, which is faster than loading hundreds of separate images. Animations, character sets, and tilesets are all commonly shipped as sprite sheets.

How do I make a sprite sheet from separate images?

Upload your frames (PNG, JPG, or WebP), drag them into the right order, pick a horizontal, vertical, or grid layout, and download the combined sheet. Everything runs in your browser, so your images are never uploaded to a server.

Can I turn a GIF into a sprite sheet?

Yes, but use the dedicated GIF to Sprite Sheet converter instead: it extracts the frames for you and keeps their timing order. To go the other way, the Sprite Sheet to GIF tool animates an existing sheet.

What layout should I use for my game engine?

Horizontal: Best for simple walk cycles and sidescroller animations.
Vertical: Some engines prefer vertical strips.
Grid: More compact for large animations, works with most modern engines.

Do frames need to be the same size?

Yes, all frames should have the same dimensions for consistent sprite sheet output. If your frames vary in size, resize them first with the Image Resizer tool.

What order are frames arranged in?

Frames are arranged in the order you upload them. You can drag to reorder them before generating the sprite sheet.

Is transparency preserved?

Yes. The generated sheet is a PNG with full alpha transparency, so sprites with transparent backgrounds stay transparent in your engine.

Is this sprite sheet maker free?

Yes, free with no signup and no watermark. If you want to draw or animate the frames themselves, the Novaboard editor is free in your browser too, and can export sprite sheets with JSON metadata directly.
