Frequently Asked Questions
What is AVIF?
AVIF is a modern image format derived from the AV1 video codec. It offers excellent compression with both lossy and lossless modes, plus HDR and wide colour gamut.
How long does encoding take?
Encoding runs locally via WebAssembly (libavif). Small images encode in under a second; large images may take several seconds. Nothing leaves your device.
What quality should I use?
50 is the default. Lower values (~30) yield smaller files at the cost of artefacts; higher values (~80+) approach lossless. AVIF quality numbers run lower than JPEG for the same perceived quality.
Are there any size limits?
Yes. Images larger than 4096×4096 pixels are rejected to keep encoding responsive in the browser.
